There was only one surgeon near patient’s home who had limited experience performing this type of operation
A physician was identified in another state who successfully performed many sex reassignment procedures but he did not accept insurance and required advance payment which insurer was not in position to authorize
SOLUTION
Case manager recommended the claimant obtain a medical care credit card to pay for surgery and submit the amount borrowed to the insurance carrier for reimbursement after surgery.
OUTCOME
Operation was performed successfully and the claimant was pleased with the result. The fee she paid to the doctor for the procedure on the credit card was reimbursed to her by the claims payer.
